Step 1: Enroll at City Office
When you register your address at Shinjuku City Office, you should also enroll in the National Pension at the same visit. The Medical Insurance & Pension Division is on the 4th floor.
Step 2: Understand Your Obligations
Monthly contributions are approximately 16,980 yen. If you cannot afford this, you may apply for exemption or deferral at the pension counter.
Step 3: Know Your Options When Leaving Japan
If you leave Japan, you can claim a lump-sum withdrawal of your pension contributions within 2 years of departure. This is a partial refund based on months contributed.
