Technical Intern Training Program (TITP) Guide

Japan's Technical Intern Training Program (技能実習 / TITP) allows workers from developing countries to learn skills in Japanese workplaces. The program is being reformed and will transition to a new "Ikusei Shuro" (育成就労) system. Understanding your rights as an intern and the available transition paths is important for planning your time in Japan.

How the Program Works

Interns are accepted through "supervising organizations" (監理団体) in Japan that partner with "sending organizations" in the home country. The training plan is pre-approved, and the intern works at a designated company learning specific skills.

Your Rights as a Trainee

  • You are protected by Japanese labor law (minimum wage, overtime pay, days off)
  • Your passport and Residence Card belong to you — no one may confiscate them

  • Workplace harassment and forced labor are illegal

Transitioning to SSW

After completing TITP Phase 2 (3 years), you can apply for SSW Type 1 in the same sector without taking the skills test or Japanese language test. This allows up to 5 more years in Japan.
