Child Allowance Application Guide
Japan provides a monthly child allowance (児童手当) to all families raising children, including foreign residents. The benefit is paid until the child turns 18 (high school graduation). Following the 2024 expansion, there is no longer an income cap, and families with 3+ children receive increased amounts.
| Child's Age | Monthly Amount |
|---|---|
| Under 3 | 15,000 yen |
| 3 to elementary school | 10,000 yen (3rd child+: 15,000 yen) |
| Junior high school | 10,000 yen |
| High school (new) | 10,000 yen |

Q: Can foreign residents receive child allowance?
Yes. All residents with valid residence status raising children in Japan are eligible, regardless of nationality.
Q: What if I apply late?
Benefits are generally paid from the month following your application. Late applications cannot receive retroactive payments for months before the application date (except within the 15-day grace period).
