Specified Skilled Worker (特定技能) Visa Guide

The Specified Skilled Worker (SSW / 特定技能) visa was introduced in 2019 to address labor shortages in specific industries. It offers a direct path to working in Japan for people with the right skills, without requiring a university degree. SSW Type 1 covers 16 designated sectors, while SSW Type 2 (available in 11 sectors as of 2024) offers a path toward permanent residence.

How to Qualify

Pass the Skills Test

Each sector has its own skills evaluation test. Tests are offered in Japan and in several sending countries. Former Technical Intern Training (TIT) completers in the same sector may be exempt.

Pass the Japanese Language Test

JLPT N4 level or JFT-Basic A2 level is required for Type 1. Nursing care requires an additional Japanese test. TIT completers are generally exempt from the language requirement.

Find a Registered Employer

The employer typically need to be registered with the immigration office as an SSW-accepting organization and provide a support plan for the worker.

Q: Can I change jobs on an SSW visa?

Yes, you can change employers within the same sector. You need to find a new registered employer and submit a change notification to immigration. Changing to a different sector requires passing that sector's skills test.

Q: What support does the employer provide?

Employers or registered support organizations help with airport pickup, housing arrangements, Japanese language training, daily life support, and consultation services. This support is mandatory under the SSW program.
