My Number Card: Complete Guide for Foreigners
Every resident in Japan is assigned a 12-digit My Number (マイナンバー) for tax, social security, and disaster response. The optional My Number Card serves as a photo ID and enables digital services like e-Tax and convenience store certificates. Applying is free and increasingly beneficial as it replaces the health insurance card.

Q: Is sharing my My Number safe?
Only share with employers, financial institutions, and government offices as required by law. The number is on the back of the card.
Q: What happens to the card if I leave Japan?
It becomes invalid when you deregister your address. If you return, you need a new card but your number stays the same.
